Fundamental Design Principles

Aug 02, 2018

Design changes and evolves over time. You have only to contrast classical Greek temples against the Art Gallery of Alberta to see that. It’s equally obvious when you compare the symmetry and balanced proportions of Renaissance art to the amorphous blobs of the 1960s.

From graphic design to game and web interfaces, and from architecture to interior design, design trends seem to change with the seasons. Nevertheless, at JLS Decals & Signs, we base our core values and approach on four basic design principles.

Collaboration

It may sound cliché, but, when it comes to design, two (or more) heads are better than one. In fact, a single‑minded approach is rarely complete. We believe it’s better to collaborate and to weigh both our designers’ and our clients’ input. Let’s face it: as our culture continues to shift and become increasingly complex, so does design. Solutions require more than what one person alone can deliver. Collaboration and active listening bring people together, engaging them in a collective, experiential process.

Active listening

Active listening and keen observations are not only virtues, but also a key part of every good designer’s toolkit. Clients have perceived needs and desires; however, when we listen and truly observe, the end product addresses our customers’ real needs.

Attention to detail

As in the evolution of the Google logo, even the slightest alteration to a chosen font or colour scheme can have a dramatic effect on brand perception. Attention to detail is therefore paramount and something we at JLS strive for with every project.

Experimentation and iteration

It may be hard to imagine several variations of the statue of David. Sculpture, after all, is a challenging art form, and marble is costly. Skillful as he was, Michelangelo really had only one shot at his masterpiece. However, in today’s design environment, digital tools let us explore a number of solutions. Through an iterative process, we can generate several options until we arrive at the desired design solution.

At JLS Decals & Signs, we take pride in our work and look forward to working directly with you to create your project, whatever your needs or budget. Our team is happy to answer questions about any of our products or materials. If you need a fast turnaround or quick installation, don’t hesitate to communicate this to us.

This year of 2020 is proving to be a year of an unknown type. Protecting our health and those of the ones we love is a great responsibility so social distancing is worth it. There is also the snow. When will it end here in Edmonton area? At a time of social distancing for healthy and safety, what can we do when a weekend like Easter is near? Well, it might be time to get creative and learn more about technology at our fingertips to be sure connection happens regularly. Here are some ideas to get you started if you are a bit rusty like me. Knock Knock jokes Knock Knock jokes are a video opportunity waiting to happen. I recently rediscovered these corny sources of humor while searching the Internet. Inspired, I video recorded myself saying “knock, knock,” and sent to my almost five-year-old great nephew via his Mom’s smartphone. In a little while, he responded with “Who’s there?” in his own video. From there, we traded short videos until hitting the punch line. It was a much-needed connection in the middle of a day for me. My great nephew and his parents, who are working from home and entertaining their two young active boys, appreciated the diversion, too.
